Colin and I are getting ready for a 4 day, 44 mile canoe trip on the Jack's Fork and Current Rivers with our friend Chris. I put together this video to show the food we will be taking in order to give everyone an idea of what is involved. I recently purchased a dehydrator and have been experimenting with using it to reduce bulk and improve meal quality. For this trip I am taking 2 lbs. of hamburger which will allow us to have spaghetti and sloppy joes. We could easily do this trip without a cooler, but I decided to take a small one so Colin could have fresh milk in stead of powdered milk. This trip is sort of a trial run for our Boundary Waters trip in July and my Yosemite trip in August.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch Climbing Trip
The last trip was cold. This one was wet. We drove down Thursday night and met Andreas and Abbie. They had come down Thursday morning to have an extra day so Abbie could look around...good thing they did because that was the last dry climbing there would be until Sunday. Friday we started out with a warm up on Girth Hitch and then proceeded to tackle some easy new routes.
Girth Hitch (5.7+) | Sofia Says (5.8+) | Yo sista (5.9) | The Danforth Anchor (5.9-) | Tufantastic (5.8+)
Saturday involved either climbing wet routes just after the rain had stopped or playing on super easy stuff after it had started raining again. I enjoyed placing my cams on the easy trad routes in the rain. I think I found the first routes for Colin! The afternoon and evening were spent in the barn playing in the Speliobox. Except for me...I've learned I'm a bit claustrophobic. I guess I won't be taking up caving!
Scrambled Eggs (5.8) | Molt (5.9-) - 1 | Class Clown (5.4) - L | Little Miss Giggles (5.5) - L | Playing Hooky (5.8+) - 2
Sunday Andreas and Abbie headed home because she was not feeling well. Then the starter in his car failed. Not a good day for them : ( Andy, John, and I fared better with a fairly sunny day and some good routes. Gracie's 8 was more of a challenge than I remembered...of course it was wet. Orange Crush was good! It was tiring at the crux, but I managed to pull through it cleanly...glad I finally got this one under my belt...nice route! A couple new routes near the Cliffs of Insanity and it was time to head home.
Gracie's 8 (5.8+) | Orange Crush (5.9+) | Sphagnum Esplanade (5.8) | Dirty thieving bastards (5.8)
[A = Attempted | L = Lead | # = Note]
Notes:
1. Went up 3/4 of the way but didn't finish because the slab was wet.
2. Had to go off route because of the wet slab.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch Climbing Trip
After waiting all winter it was finally time to head back to Arkansas for some climbing! My last trip wasn't all that great as I was feeling uncomfortable leading and just wasn't feeling strong. This time I was ready. We headed down to the ranch after work on Thursday March 7th. Got camp setup just after 12:30 and had a restful 32 degree night. Friday morning we got up and headed to the Ozark Cafe for a warm breakfast before returning to the ranch around 9:00. By then the sun was out and the day warmed up to the low 60's. By late afternoon the weather was blowing in and it turned cold. Thankfully it stayed in the low 40's Friday night with a light rain...is there any better way to fall asleep than in a tent with a light rain?
Summer Rain (5.6) | Lion Tamer (5.9-) - 1 | African Herb Man (5.8) | The Controversy (5.9) - A, 2 | Around the Fur (5.8+) - 3 | Meck, Mecke...What's the Difference? (5.9+) - 3 | Eighteen Inches (5.7) - L | Honorary Brave (5.8)
Saturday morning was a bit chilly, but much nicer than the day before! After a hearty breakfast we decided to break camp due to the coming rain and spend a second day in the North Forty. We continued to climb routes that I had never been on which was the highlight of the trip for me! I know some people skip over the routes below their grade, but for me I want to climb them at least once since this is our "home crag" and it is easy to get to. I've found some really enjoyable 5.8's because of this. After another nearly full day of climbing we left the ranch around 5:00. By the time we were North of Harrison we hit the rain and it stayed with us most of the way home. We all hated to leave a day early, but are grateful we did as it rained all day Sunday in Northern Arkansas. I am really looking forward to getting back to HCR next month and working on ticking off some more unclimbed routes!
Pulp Fiction (5.8+) - L | Ides of March (5.7) | Tres Equies (5.9-) | The Bulb (5.9) - 3 | The Kindergarten Pimp (5.9) | Smooth Criminal (5.9)
[A = Attempted | L = Lead | # = Note]
Notes:
1. I finally remembered to climb this route with out traversing right onto Frankenberry!
2. I had 2 takes at the crux. I'll get it next time!
3. This is a great route as it has some nice moves. Definitely one of my favorites!
